A local's guide to Darlinghurst

Darlinghurst packs more good tables into a few blocks than anywhere else this close to the city. It is steep, it is dense, the rooms are small, and that turns out to suit it. These are six places we send people to, whether they have just moved into the suburb or have lived here long enough to have opinions about it.

Buffalo Dining Club

Surrey Street. The cacio e pepe is tossed through a hollowed wheel of pecorino at the table, which sounds like a gimmick until it arrives. Buffalo milk cheese and mozzarella are made on site. The room is small and it is almost always full, so book.

Chaco Ramen

Crown Street. Keita Abe built his reputation on the robata grill in this same small room when it was Chaco Bar. It is noodle soup now, made with the same seriousness the grill got. Worth the wait if there is one.

Dimitri's Pizzeria

Oxford Street. Woodfire pizza out of an Italian-made oven, a dining room with actual room to move, plus a small bar upstairs for before or after. The easy answer when a group cannot agree.

Fabbrica Pasta Bar

Fresh pasta made daily, plus a cotoletta that regulars order without looking at the menu. One of the Love Tilly rooms, which tells you what to expect from the wine list.

A.P Bread & Wine

Burton Street. A bakery and coffee from early, then the lights go down and it becomes a wine room. Sit in the garden if the weather allows it or take the seat by the fire if it does not. One of the few places in the suburb that genuinely works at both ends of the day.

Love, Tilly Devine

Crown Lane. A small wine bar down a laneway, named after one of the figures who ran these streets in the 1920s. The list is long, the room is tiny, and it is the right last stop.

Living in Darlinghurst

The housing stock is mostly apartments and converted terraces, which means small footprints, high ceilings, and outlooks that are better than the floor plans suggest. It is a walking suburb: the city, Surry Hills, Potts Point and the park are all inside fifteen minutes on foot, so a car is optional in a way it is not in most of Sydney. That combination is why tenants who move into Darlinghurst tend to stay in Darlinghurst.

Venues change. Everything here was checked against at least two independent sources and confirmed trading on 24 August 2026, but call ahead before you make a special trip.
